Gevan walked down to the dock where the shipping officer had told him the departure would be tonight. There weren’t a lot of people around for there to be a ship leaving dock; it was actually pretty quiet. There were three ships docked. Two were very large with four masts. Those two each had one or two people on deck.
As he came to the end where he was told to go, he saw the third ship, with three masts and a deck swarming with people. It was very well kept, painted in bright green and gold. The name was Serpent of the Sea. The bow came to a point with an elaborate carved head and partial body of a sea monster, with eyes of a red stone and scales painted gold and silver. There was a fin down the center of the head that went all the way down the spine; it was painted red to match the eyes.
Just above the waterline was a row of eight windows, each with a glow of light coming from inside. As Gevan walked up to the ramp leading to the deck, he heard his name yelled from above. He looked up and saw Harry standing at the top of the ramp.
“Come aboard, Gevan,” Harry yelled down.
Gevan waved and paused for a moment. He looked at Harry. Was he sure he wanted to do this? His mother had assured him everything would be all right. Philip was helping out with the deliveries. But that all seemed trivial compared to what he was carrying in his right trouser pocket, and what it meant.
He took a big breath and walked up the ramp, holding on to the ropes. Suddenly he was nervous for a whole different reason – he had never been on a boat before. He had never been off of land.
He reached the top, and Harry gave him a hug and kiss on the cheek. “Welcome to The Serpent.”
“Whose boat is this?” Gevan was impressed with the care taken to the embellishments engraved in the serpent, the deck railing that tied into the tail of the serpent, and the upward spiral carving on the masts. The deck was clean and smooth, but not so much to make it too slippery when wet. The carved serpent’s tail continued onto the deck into a coiled position.
“It is our family boat. I sent word a few days ago to my brother to send it for my trip home. It arrived this morning.” Harry motioned for a deck hand to take Gevan’s bag and told him to take it to his quarters. “Would you like a tour?”
“Maybe later. Harry –is there somewhere we can be alone?”
“We can go to my quarters or the royal dining room.”
“Food sounds good. Are you hungry?” Gevan was a bit nervous and wanted to sit and talk about what to expect when they arrived in Fraycia the next day.
“I am starved. I skipped lunch getting ready to leave. Follow me.” Harry led him to the stern-side stairs under the main mast leading below deck.
